(June 26, 2024 – Toronto, ON)  –  In 1976, Toronto funk and R&B pioneers, Crack of Dawn, released their eponymous album, cementing their reputation as trailblazers of the genre. Crack of Dawn has since inspired more than a generation of artists and fans, and until now, this classic release has only been available on vinyl and through user-uploaded content on YouTube. Crack of Dawn is proud to announce the release of this album across streaming services, making their music available to a new generation of fans. Listen Here.

The album features the quintessential 1976 line-up of the band – Trevor Daley, Rupert Harvey, Mark Smith, Alvin Jones, Carl Otway, Carl Harvey, Glen Ricketts, Jacek Sobotta, and Dwight Gabriel, and was originally produced by Bob Gallo, who had previously worked with Otis Redding on his runaway hit “(Sittin On) the Dock of the Bay.”

Crack of Dawn were icons of the era; history-makers as the first Black group to be signed to a major label in Canada. The band has recently seen a resurgence of interest as their story gets rediscovered and told. A documentary about the band called “Paving the Way: The Crack of Dawn Story” situates the band in musical and cultural history. Crack of Dawn is also featured in the upcoming four-part docu-series “Sounds Black,” airing on the History Channel and written and directed by Cazhhmere, who cites Crack of Dawn as major players in Black Canadian cultural history.
