Old Dominion Returns with “Coming Home”

(Toronto.ON; June 28 2024 ) Over the last decade, Old Dominion has run the wheels off a couple vans, loaded up and out a series of tour buses, playing clubs, arenas, amphitheaters and several summers on Kenny Chesney’s herculean stadium tours. The band of brothers, steeped in worldclass songwriting for themselves as well as Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Chesney and more, have built a reputation for creating songs that bring life into focus and turn up the effervescence that feels good even on flat days.

Given the pace of the last two years, there’s an urgency of pure delight firing Coming Home,” the first track from Old Dominion’s eagerly anticipated follow-up to the hit-slinging Memory Lane out today. With a wheezing harmonica, stomping backbeat, and vocal forward chorus breakdown before an “all jam” play out, everything about the song written by Old Dominion and longtime collaborator/producer Shane McAnally creates the kind of connection and desire that’s meant to combust and slow burn at once.

After a year spent doubling down on the sold-out arena success Old Dominion’s enjoyed for the last few seasons of touring, they were ready to get back to recording and releasing new music. Though a band known for its euphoric live shows, Matthew Ramsey, Brad Tursi and Trevor Rosen with the thumping rhythm section of Geoff Sprung and Whit Sellers shine in the studio; not just crafting ear worms that should be at the bottom of tequila, but creating arrangements that grab listeners with a freshness that lands like a splash of cold water.

“I think everyone at some point suffers from that separation desperation,” Matthew Ramsey says. “You’re living your life; you know what you’re doing is totally worth it. But then when you turn the truck, car, bus or airplane home, there’s this energy that sweeps over you – and it feels good.

In a time when debuts are often parsed out, anticipation for the track from the band who’s just picked up their seventh Academy of Country Music – and sixth Country Music Association – Vocal Group of the Year title made the decision to world premiere the song across all radio platforms at once. Having become a favorite, rolling out of car windows across the country, the band who are serious music junkies wanted to spread the love and share the magic with everybody.

Recorded in Nashville, the homecoming metaphor is reflected in everything about creating “Coming Home.” Whether invoking the famous photo of the kiss after the liberation, the sweeping twang or the ecstatic Everyman erotic charge of Ramsey’s message to the one he loves, it’s a promise of pleasure, interaction and the kind of reunion that makes being gone worthwhile.

With “I Was On A Boat That Day,” “Written In The Sand,” “Break Up With Him,” “Song for Another Time,” “No Hard Feelings,” “Memory Lane” and “Hotel Key,” Old Dominion created a space for people who want to experience life, love and adventure as a way of being. “Coming Home” leans into that, giving the home fires a little extra kick of anticipation.
