(9/6/2024) Like everything about Old Dominion, it’s not always the most obvious thing that matters. Sure, they’ve had nine #1s, won 6 and 7 Vocal Group of the Year honors at the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music Awards and spent the last couple years headlining major arenas and iconic festivals. Yes, their songs have been recorded by Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Sam Hunt, Dierks Bentley and Blake Shelton, among many, and their own songs often light up days that need to go a little better.
Old Dominion, a collective of songwriter/musicians who started playing gigs for the fun of it, has always been a band who played for the people. With a mission of making every show the “Best Night Ever” for the people in the house, Matthew Ramsey, Brad Tursi, Trevor Rosen, Geoff Sprung and Whit Sellers listened to the people who love their music, took it in and realized: as much as the songs on the radio are obvious, there are so many songs that cut just as deep.
“When we’re onstage, people bring these signs… Pieces of lyrics, or titles that when I’m up there looking, I can’t believe they know,” marvels Ramsey. “It’s that thing where we believe in every song we record because they all mean something to us, but when you realize someone else has taken that song buried on an album and made it their own, it just stops you in your tracks.”
“As we’ve been spending this summer out at a lot of the festivals, I think every one of us has been amazed at the songs that come up in conversations backstage, running into people who love the band. The more we talked about it internally, the more we thought: ‘Let’s make the ultimate mix tape for the original fans and for the hardcore believers!’ Because we still remember when making a mix tape was the ultimate way to talk to your friends.”
Adding in “Coming Home,” the brisk midtempo about getting back to where you belong, Odies gathers up “Written in the Sand,” “Song for Another Time,” “Break Up with Him,” “Hotel Key,” “Snapback” and deep cuts including “Nowhere Fast,” “Hawaii,” “Some Horses” and “Still Writing Songs About You” to create a fuller picture. And after many requests, Old Dominion recorded Johnny Lee’s all-genre #1 “Lookin’ For Love,” which they performed on the 2020 CMA Awards telecast to honor the movie “Urban Cowboy.”
And to kick-off this ultimate love letter to their fans, the band has unveiled Odies, a new Old Dominion fan community which fans can join now. Old Dominion will also close out Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series Sept. 6. Known for their euphoric live shows, they are the perfect artist to shut down summer for ABC’s award-winning morning show.
“We love playing ‘Good Morning America,’ and Robin Roberts, Lara Spencer and their whole team. To us, they feel like the same kind of family we are, and that’s a big piece of what Odies but Goodies is all about,” says Ramsey. “Joy, Fun, Life, and just getting through it no matter how you feel, and also feeling better because you can listen or tune into people who help you feel better. “
