Written by Aqyila and Sam Hook (Ne-Yo, Miley Cyrus, French Montana, Chris Brown) and from producer Monro (Jhené Aiko, Masego, Tori Kelly) – who also brought fans 2024’s steamy “Limbo”– “Focus” is an upbeat R&B jam from an assured artist. Addressing the object of her desire, Aqyila knows what she needs (“your touch…your mind…your future…your present”) and she’s “not settling for less.” She wants her lover’s best – but more than that, she knows she deserves it.

“I’m so happy to be stepping into 2025 with this song,” says Aqyila. “2024 was a year of so many firsts and so much growth for me. Getting into the studio and putting my heart into song helped me feel grounded in myself amidst all that change. “Focus” is all about feeling confident and knowing my worth – that’s the energy I’m bringing to 2025.”

Aqyila continues her string of wins into the new year. In 2024, she earned a JUNO Award for ‘Traditional R&B / Soul Recording of the Year’ with her song “Hello”; achieved viral success with “Bloom”; released “Most Wanted,” which included collaborations with Nike and Tribal Carnival; presented at the Legacy Awards; performed in Canada and abroad, including at UK singer Mahalia’s iconic series “Mahalia Presents” at the Jazz Café in Camden, London; and headlined her first sold-out show in her hometown of Toronto. As she launches into a new year, Aqyila is preparing to head out on a North American tour (in support of Pink Sweat$); a guest appearance on iconic TV Show “Murdoch Mysteries”; syncs of her music in Amazon original series “Harlem”; and new music and opportunities.

In 2021, Toronto R&B artist Aqyila’s first single “Vibe for Me (Bob for Me)” landed her first JUNO Award nomination for ‘Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year.’ It was the start of a steady rise for the young songwriter.
