Today (October 18th) Canadian songwriter and producer, Lubalin shares his latest single, “dog”. The track is a seamless culmination of introspective lyrics and a gliding hi-hat beat that carries Lubalin’s melancholic, sweet-as-honey voice through an exploration of self-doubt and the fear of losing control. Coming off of his forthcoming debut album, haha, no worries, “dog” is at once tender and remorseful – a pensive thought spiral that floats light as air and an exhibition of the inner workings of Lubalin’s mind.
Passionate and contemplative, Lubalin’s undiluted honesty and musicality are on full display in “dog”. A master at blending the frenetic stylings of 2000s-era electro-pop with laid-back indie alt rock influences, “dog” teeters on the edge between hopelessness and yearning for peace. The track is a ruminative whirlwind of emotion that stays in motion with its electronic accents and flourishes, sounding like a dimly lit mental spiral as Lubalin tells himself: “Sometimes I yell like a wounded dog / Even when I know there’s nothing wrong.”
Lubalin says of the track:
“I love ‘dog’ because it’s actually secretly a sad piano ballad disguised as a big pop drum & bass song. I wrote it on the piano originally but when I was working on the album, I was exploring so many different iterations that I figured I’d try this song in the DnB sound that was emerging. After turning stone after stone, banging my head against it, something just clicked, and the whole thing just came to life. It went from a demo I almost cut out from the album twice to one of my favorite songs.
I really like that line that says: ‘Sometimes I yell like a wounded dog, even when I know there’s nothing wrong, It doesn’t ever seem to matter what I know’. The lyrics explore themes of emotional struggle and intellectualizing feelings, with a cathartic chorus that ironically brings a sense of peace through the acceptance of not finding peace.”
The track follows the release of Lubalin’s single “bullet time”, a powerful blend of raw emotion, sharp lyricism, and unrestrained vocals. The song was originally penned during writing sessions with Charlotte Cardin for her 99 Nights album. “There’s a lot of drum & bass inspiration, organic drum breaks, this sense of motion, chopped background vocals… it’s very cool,” Lubalin shares. “But I also like things that are right on the edge of being cheesy. It’s almost like ‘The Matrix’ soundtrack meets 2000s soft pop.”
On his forthcoming debut album haha, no worries, Lubalin blurs the line between child-like wonder and decidedly adult self-doubt. Mining an overlooked vein of experience, the everyday interactions and off-the-cuff communications we toss back and forth with little thought – presenting a series of emotionally raw but meticulously crafted observations with a wry sense of humour and a gleeful disregard for convention.
Blending pop-leaning drum & bass influences, 2000s-era electro-pop, indie, and alt. rock, the Montreal-based artist/producer juxtaposes urgent, often frenetic rhythms and vocal loops against deceptively laid-back vocals and instrumental tracks that rely heavily on the duality that informs his music and life.
Lubalin’s haha, no worries LP is available for vinyl pre-order/digital pre-save now.
